Dixie

Hey there, let me introduce myself. My name is Dixie and I am approximately 3 years old, but I feel & act like a puppy. I am a Vizsla/Doberman mix. I was surrendered to a municipal shelter in Oklahoma and saved by this great woman, Allison, with Doberman rescue. Realizing I had a good amount of Vizsla in me, Allison contacted 2nd Chance Vizsla Rescue and with the help of Canine Crossing Rescue & Transport I arrived in Albuquerque, NM on Valentine’s Day to meet my new foster parents with 2CVR.

I did come with a hidden health problem; I had an occult heartworm infection. 2CVR and the fantastic staff at Good Shepard Animal Clinic got me started on an aggressive treatment to eliminate the heartworms. By May I was ready to be available for adoption – with only one more follow up in October for confirmation the treatment had been a total success!

Included with my hidden health problem was the evidence I had no social skills when it came to other dogs and new environments – everything was just so exciting and isn’t it best to meet the new world with exuberance?! Basically I was a 60 pound puppy. Summer came and went and I made vast improvements both socially and physically, even though I still need work with my barking and behavior when I am outside of the house in the vicinity of other dogs, I just really LOVE life.

When I was cleared of heartworm people started showing an interest in adopting me but for one reason or another, the adoptions didn’t go through… some people changed their minds, while others I understand just weren’t a good fit. I didn’t know all this fuss was even happening and had pretty much decided I was already in my forever home. My foster parents were smitten with me since my arrival on Valentine’s Day; but their family already had 2 dogs (both rescued V’s) and they were fostering to help other rescues and not looking to adopt. When they got word another potential adoption was not going through they asked if they could apply to adopt me and I got the best Christmas present ever. Now I am “officially” home with my mom and dad and brother and sister rescue Vs!

Loving life in Albuquerque thanks to 2nd Chance Vizsla Rescue!

Love, Dixie
