May 2, 2022 – December 22, 2022
We picked up Ranger on May 5, 2022 from the Sandoval, NM shelter. It seems his owner had passed away and the son did not want him. So, he was turned over to the shelter
We were only going to foster him at this point. He was very timid and shy. Not even understanding what a treat was. He was scared of being outside and since we live on 40 acres, he did not like being outside by himself. Even the wind scared him. But how he liked to sleep. Wanting to take over any bed or couch and just sleep.
We found out he had separation anxiety when we left him with our other two dogs for just a short time. He chewed a piece of the window sill off. So even though we had been working on crate training, we stepped up the process very fast. He now does not fuss when being left in his kennel.
We got a trainer in for some basic commands. Sit, down, stay…come. He was a fast learner especially when he discovered treats. He is now working on heel and leave it.
He did not know how to play with other dogs. But our Vizsla Misty has kept after him until he finally is understanding “chase me” from Misty.
We have nick-named Ranger; Tigger, as he loves to bounce over things and has a spring in his feet when happy, which shows up especially when we are getting ready for a walk.
He is a very calm and sweet guy and we just could not give him up. He just grew to fit right into our family…. Sitting on any lap he could find…. even though he is 56 pounds now. Yes, with all the exercise and good food, he had gained about 8-10 pounds. More muscle for sure. And after a daily morning walk, he loves to sleep. We have pillows in every room so he can be close to people at all times and sleep.
We are so very happy he came to our home, and Ranger is too.
